A Chess Master

The motto of my novel:

The narrator discovers that he has advanced melanoma. To dispel his fear of death, he starts manically playing chess on the internet. On a chess website, he sees a photo of grandmaster Igors Rausis sitting in a toilet with a mobile phone in his hand. The photo was used as proof that Rausis had been illicitly consulting a computer chess program during a tournament game.
It’s game over for Rausis, who toured the international chess circuit while also working as a coach in various countries for over forty years. The narrator becomes obsessed with an enigma: what was it that made this respected chess professional resort to cheating? He travels to Riga and eventually finds Rausis in a small shack on a building site where he is working as a nightwatchman.
It turns out that Rausis is also suffering from incurable cancer. The two men drink tea together late into the night, discussing chess, cheating, childhood, life choices, death and fate.
Their conversations shed light on the fascinating but merciless world of grandmaster chess, in which there are ultimately few winners.
Afterwards, a chance encounter in a café provides the narrator with a female perspective on chess and on what to do with whatever remains of his life.

A Chess Master is an elegiac gem, a deep dive into life’s big questions as reflected in the battle of sixty-four squares.

My novel, inspired by a real-life cheating incident during the Strasbourg tournament in 2019, delves into the fascinating world of chess strategy, human ambition, and ethical dilemmas offering a narrative that resonates beyond the 64 squares, as chess is also a mirror of life.

The story is appealing to both chess lovers and those new to the game.

With insights gained from my conversations with Igors Rausis in Riga, the story gains additional authenticity and depth. At the end of the novel, a chance encounter brings a female perspective to chess adding layers to the chess narrative and existential existential themes.

Shakki ja syöpä yhdistävät kahta miestä. Toinen pelaa kuolemanpelkoonsa, toinen on häpäisty suurmestari.

Mies saa tietää sairastavansa levinnyttä melanoomaa. Häivyttääkseen kuolemanpelkoaan hän pelaa maanisesti nettishakkia. Silloin hän näkee salaa otetun valokuvan, jossa shakin suurmestari Igors Rausis istuu invavessassa matkapuhelin kädessään. Kuva paljasti Rausisin huijanneen.
Rausisin pelit oli pelattu. Mikä sai yli neljäkymmentä vuotta shakkia ympäri maailmaa pelanneen ja opettaneen legendan sortumaan huijaukseen? Mies saa pakkomielteen selvittää tapausta. Hän matkustaa Riikaan ja löytää Rausisin työmaakopista, jossa tämä istuu yövartijana.
Miehet juovat yötä myöten teetä ja puhuvat elämästä, kuolemasta, huijauksesta, valinnoista ja luopumisesta. Myös Rausis sairastaa parantumatonta syöpää.
Rausisin kertomuksista välittyy huippushakin kiehtova mutta armoton peliareena, jossa useimmilla mestaripelaajilla on vain hävittävää. Shakki ei ole vain peli.
Kaiken jälkeen satunnainen kohtaaminen kahvilassa näyttää miehelle naisnäkökulman shakkiin ja saa tämän näkemään loppuelämänsä uusin silmin.

Shakkimestari on eleginen ja sivistynyt pieni helmi, joka käsittelee suuria kysymyksiä 64 ruudun äärellä.

Romaanini pohjautuu todelliseen huijaukseen Strasbourgin turnauksessa vuonna 2019. Se kertoo huippushakin kiehtovasta, mutta samalla armottomasta maailmasta ja sen kautta elämän peruskysymyksistä. Shakki on elämän peili.

Kertojan keskustelut Rausisin kanssa tuovat autenttisen lisän tarinan eksistentiaalisiin teemoihin. Romaanin lopussa sattumanvarainen kohtaaminen tuo shakkiin naisen näkökulman ja myös miehen sairauteen.
